What is Convocation?

Uncovering the Mystery of Convocation: Student Interviews

What in the world even is a convocation? Tower Hill students don’t seem to know much about convocation besides the fact that it is an all-school event they must attend on Friday, September 27. Seeking to better understand this significant but puzzling school event, Molly Hurst ‘26 and I interviewed upper school students asking for their predictions. When asking the seemingly unanswerable question “What do you think convocation is?,” we received various responses defining it ranging from a government event to the proper name of a group of eagles. Let’s see what these students thought.

Read below for a transcript of these fun student interviews, or watch this above clip:

Molly Hurst ‘26 (Interviewer): Do you know what convocation is?

Sophia Karron ‘26: No.

Molly Hurst: What do you think convocation is?

Sophia Karron: I think it's when we come together as a school to basically celebrate the opening of school. But I know last year we had a coronation or something for Ms. Baker. But either way, vocal ensemble has to sing. So whenever there's convocation, coronation, whatever, vocal ensemble sings.

Molly Hurst ‘26 (Interviewer): So, I'm here with Anna, who's a freshman. She's going to tell us what she thinks convocation is.

Anna Kayiaros ‘28: I don't know.

Molly Hurst: But like, if you had to guess. What does the word convocation make you think of?

Anna Kayiaros: Something to do with the government? I don't know.

Molly Hurst: Close enough, thank you.

Allison Chi ‘26 (Interviewer): What do you think convocation is?

Lisa Lu ‘26:  I think it's where the band plays the alma mater, and then the new something or something is sworn into school. Like we did that last year, right, for Mrs. Sarah Baker? Yeah, where basically they walk down the aisle, and then the whole school sits there, and then they get coronated.

Allison Chi: Okay. Okay, thank you.

Allison Chi ‘26 (Interviewer): What do you think convocation's going to be like this year?

Rikky Sanjeev ‘26: I don't know exactly what it is. I've never— I haven't— I've only been here for like two years and I've never been to a convocation. It's probably some inspiration to start the year on a good note. And I'm looking forward to hearing our vice president's speech.

Allison Chi ‘26 (Interviewer): What do you think a convocation is this week?

Brandon Liu ‘25: Well, I know that a convocation is actually the term for a group of eagles.

Allison Chi ‘26: What do you think's gonna happen at convocation this year?

Catherine Farnan ‘25: Honestly, not entirely too sure. I know it's for Dr. Phillips, and I know I have a little tower term buddy that I'm supposed to hang out with. So, it's probably gonna be one of the usual, hour-long — what's the word, speeches, where you just sit there and zone out.

Allison Chi: Okay, thank you. We'll see if that's right.

Are any of these predictions correct? We’ll find out on Friday, September 27.
