The volleyball team posing after their amazing win!

With an overall record of 18-1, our very own Tower Hill volleyball team was able to take the victory in the Delaware state finals, 2024. While only losing one game during their regular season to Ursuline, the dominant team recovered with continuous victories. Even though this loss was part of a close game, the girls came back, beating Ursuline 3-0 in the semi-finals. Following this, they had a great game in finals, sweeping away their opponent, Saint Marks. At the University of Delaware, the players ended the season, walking away with a state win in a game of 3-0.

One of the team captains, Lydia Spencer, ended the game with an amazing hit. “It felt like a big relief. We were working so hard the whole set… It hit all of us. We all rushed off the bench. We all rushed together [to celebrate].” This goes to show how close the team had gotten over the season.

Moreover, the student section, sporting their white gear, were big supporters of the game. Chanting, “Bump…set…hit!” The plays were cinematic and perfectly aligned with the cheers of classmates.

Our student section decked out in white, ready to cheer on the team.

The feeling of the win was indescribable.

With the last set being the hardest and most nerve wracking, some were wondering whether it would continue to another set. After the final point, as seen in the video down below, the players as well as the school lit up in excitement. It was magical and especially cool to watch something like that my freshman year. It was inspiring to see a good portion of the Tower Hill community come together to celebrate the hard-working girls. Whether they knew about the sport well or not, the students brought a great energy to the stadium, helping to secure the win.

Through hard work and dedication, it is no wonder how the girls played as well as they did. According to Lydia, what really got them there was, “...hard work and practice. We would practice six times a week.” She told me that their coach, Coach Sachs, would plan their practices based on who their next opponent was. They would adjust their plays depending on the team. It was because of all this behind the scenes work that they were really able to achieve their goal.

Another big contributor to the win was their teamwork. They supported each other, even through the harder points. They knew the stakes and what they were playing for as soon as they stepped on the court. However, with these high stakes, they still had this confidence about them. You could tell they were there to win, and they knew they had a good chance of doing so.

With an amazing accomplishment and a great victory, the girls on the team should be more than proud of themselves. And a special congratulations to our seniors, Reagan, Lydia, and Bridget and to their future careers in volleyball!
