Sports Highlight - Ava Emrich

Updated: Sep 25, 2023

Tower Hill’s very own Ava Emrich takes the title of number one tennis player in the state of Delaware for good reason.

Emrich is a new sophomore this year, transferring from Smyrna High School upon being recruited by Tower Hill for the 2022-2023 school year. She played varsity as a freshmen, and started tennis when she was just 4 years old. “It wasn’t as popular as all the other sports and I really liked it,” she said. “I remember starting. They thought I was really good for my age. It was definitely my favorite sport — and it still is,” she reflected on her beginnings.

In her initial high school season, Emrich won her first 16 matches without losing a single set. That included three Henlopen tournament matches and two in the DIAA state tournament.

While this year’s season is still in its beginning stages, Emrich and her coaches are confident in her success in upcoming tournaments.

“One of my favorite things about it is being able to travel and meet other players,” Ava has said as she explained she has been playing in neighboring states since she was nine or ten years old. Playing in Florida earlier this year and spending her spring break away at a tennis camp, Emrich is no stranger to branching out and expanding her experience in the tennis world.

She especially emphasized this aspect when she said, “my number one goal is to play in college. I’m excited to get to that level with the game and my skills.”

Emrich has been making a social impact both on and off the court.

In Advanced US History and taking on both a Film class and Photography class that overlap in a cycle, Ava is excelling in her academics - she was reorganizing her Chemistry notes as our interview took place.

Similarly, Emrich can easily make friends wherever she goes. Having sat next to her at lunch since the beginning of the year, it is practically part of the routine to have her classmates come up to the table to talk about the latest homework assignments or how well they think they did on an assessment.

“She’s just very humble. And she’s just considerate. She’s never full of herself. It’s really nice,” Ava’s friends have said about her to highlight her all around pleasant personality.
