High School Door Decorating

Tower Hill’s exciting and creative door decorating competition in advisories made a comeback this year! Or did it really?

This normally  fun and engaging event was advertised to all the advisors, allowing each advisory to participate and have a fair start to the competition. Though it wasn’t mandatory to partake in, every advisory had a chance to seize this opportunity for a chance to win a pizza lunch–only seven did. The advisories that entered were Mr. Spear’s, Ms. Orysiek’s, Ms. Pallant’s, Dr. Sokolsky’s, Mrs. Coleman’s, Ms Helfgott’s, and Ms. Ashbrook’s. To everyone’s surprise, none of those were the senior advisories, so sadly no seniors took part in this competition. But those advisories were not the only advisories that had decorated doors, as some decorated their doors but decided not to enter them, maybe being due to the fact that they thought there was no way they would win, or that their idea was not going to resonate with the judges which is what Mrs. Douglass’s advisory thought.

The judges? Yes, the judges. They were originally supposed to be the entire middle school SGA but ended up being just the 8th grade SGA. On the upside of this, the 8th grade SGA had no connections with the students in the advisories that were entered, making this a fair fight for everyone. After all was said and done, Mrs. Coleman’s advisory won the door decorating contest with a door inspired by The Lord of the Flies by William Golding, which is fitting considering all the 9th graders have to read this book, and her advisory is a freshman advisory.

Coming in second was Ms. Pallant’s advisory who did a Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift door, and third place was earned by Ms. Helfgott’s advisory who made a spooky Halloween door adorned with spiders individually named as each advisee.

As interesting as the decorated doors were, the organizers of this competition hoped for more of a turnout with entries to make the competition more exciting and to get more people involved. Some ideas that could’ve helped this would be to include announcing it at a morning meeting or making the prize of higher value to the students, so that they would be more inclined to participate. In that way, the organizers next year can take a look at this competition, tweak it and its advertising a bit, and prepare for next year’s grander door decorating spectacle.
