Writing, blocking, and performing-the Speech Club at Tower Hill has it all!
At Tower Hill, every aspect is flourishing: from arts, academics to extracurriculars, students are given many opportunities to involve themselves in the community. The Speech Club is student-led by two sophomores with a passion for public speaking, Macy Shi and Lisa Lu. In this article, we’ll dive into what the Speech club is all about.
The Speech Club, established this year, aims to welcome all students who are interested in strengthening their public speaking skills. After a successful Club Fair, recruiting over 15 members, the club has already had their first meeting, where they went over the basics and foundations of speech. Speech consists of three main categories: oratory, poetry, and storytelling. Ranging from hilarious interpretations of children's books to socially aware and emotionally moving pieces of poetry, members are given a chance to work on various topics and categories they are interested in. Through performing and participating in these categories, the club aims to create confidence in public speaking, leadership, and ability to express themselves as they balance school and extracurriculars. So far, the club has met twice and has introduced the categories and gauged interest for each one. Soon, they will be starting pieces and providing a safe practice space for speaking skills, ultimately helping create a passionate environment. Member Noor Khan ‘26 says “Speech club is a cool opportunity for those who don’t want to be in a competitive and intimidating environment such as that of debate but would still like to practice their public speaking skills and confidence. I have been working on my public speaking and speech club has started teaching us a few techniques already and I’m excited for speech club to have more meetings and grow.”
Leaders Macy and Lisa are ambitious; through founding the Speech Club, they not only hoped to increase confidence in their members, but also strive to advocate for more public speaking opportunities in the Tower Hill curriculum. As students who are passionate about expression, they noticed that particularly in the English curriculum, there were not as many chances for public speaking in different settings as they had liked. With the agreement of club advisor and English teacher Mr. Houghtalen, they began the speech club, hoping to advocate and spark conversation for future opportunities. They also hope to eventually enroll in Speech and Debate competitions, both local and online, along with the Debate team at Tower Hill.
The Speech Club is just one of many clubs available to students at Tower Hill. After the club fair showcasing over 50 clubs, students were given complete freedom to join clubs ranging from academic to entertainment. As students complete their four years in the upper school, it is vital that they have the opportunity to lead and participate in clubs and groups with people who are passionate about the same thing, and Tower Hill allows for this in many ways.
