Chromakopia Review

By: Liam Duke

Chromakopia by Tyler, the Creator album cover

On October 28th, famed alternate Hip-Hop artist Tyler, the Creator released his sixth studio album in his so far brief but illustrious career, including two Grammys, and a MTV Video music awards. His new album looked to extend this run of his work gaining high praise and millions upon millions of streams every month. Here is the Tower Hill rubble review of Tyler the Creator’s Chromakopia:

Compared to his more recent works like Call Me When You Get Lost (2021), or Flower Boy (2017), Chomakopia brings a darker spirit to his relatively upbeat discography of music. Compared to Call Me When You Get Lost, the beats used and samples selected are darker and more ominous. Tyler the Creator in this album, describes a character named St. Chroma, which is depicted on the album cover, is this mad max style villain who Tyler the Creator looks to build the already mentioned darker theme presented in the album.

With Chromakopia, the highs are high but the lows are low. The majority of Tylers work so far has been consistently got better and better as he grows and shapes himself to be one of the frontrunners in this new style of alternate hiphop, however it seems that unfortunately he (for no at least), has reached his ceiling of how high his music can fly. The better music on the album consists of hits that follow his upbeat formula that he has created while the lows are the new, darker and more gothic ideas he is trying to push.

Summary:

While Chromakopia isn't Tyler the Creator's best work in the last decade, his new ideas and darker style he seems to be pushing are received well. I believe this album is worth your time if You already like his style, but it really isn't an album that stands for what his music is. You won’t find anyone whose favorite Tyler the Creator song is from this album. I believe that if you want to begin looking at alternative hip hop, then you should consume his older works, not Chromakopia.
