A New Look at Hiller Harvest

Updated: Nov 29, 2023

Tower Hill's annual Hiller Harvest event, a charitable initiative dedicated to collecting donations for Lutheran Community Services to support low-income families in the broader Wilmington community, aims to make a big contribution by placing a special emphasis on hygiene products this year.

“Each year, we always hold a competition between grades to encourage participation,” says Katherine, the senior co-chair of the service board and main organizer of the event.

Last year, the event collected 2,743 donations, tripling the total collected the previous year. This year's Hiller Harvest aspires to further engage students, make an even greater impact, and bring vital change to those in need. Along with new Hiller Harvest assemblies for the lower, middle, and upper schools, this year’s event also coincided with homecoming weekend, when students were already excited to connect with the community. The service board also promises a dress down day to the grade that donates the most throughout the event.

“Additionally, we’re doing something new and bigger. We are bringing the social justice board and the wellness board, including economic justice and community wellness in the event.” The collaboration intends to highlight the underlying interconnection between social justice, community wellness, and the act of service. Furthermore, the emphasis on hygiene products underscores these wellness and social justice aspects, as food stamps do not cover these items. More hygiene product donations would prevent families from making tough choices between basic necessities like food and toothpaste or soap.

As Katherine aptly states, “Donate to Hiller Harvest. Us doing better and making the world better starts with you. If everybody brings in only five items, imagine how many people we can help.”
