A Murder Is Announced: A Look Into The Fall Play

Who doesn’t love a good mystery? Everything anyone has ever discovered was once a mystery, and any question that anyone has ever posed was a mystery to someone. The great mystery of Tower Hill this year is in the form of the fall play, which is an adaptation of Agatha Christie’s A Murder Is Announced.

The story is centered around the picturesque 1940’s English village of Chipping Cleghorn, where everyone is far too nosey for their own good. One morning, It is published in the town's local newspaper that a murder is set to take place at six thirty in the evening at Little Paddocks. Following a series of antics, amateur detective Miss Marple is able to work with Inspector Craddock, a witty and sarcastic police officer, to arrest the one guilty of murder. The story is full of plot twists and red hearings to throw you off your guard

Variety of photos from the play featuring Giancarlo French '25 (top left, standing), Kelsey Mathu '27 (top left, sitting), Aili Inguito '24 (top center), Katherine Niu '24 (top right), Amal Bhattacharya '26 (bottom left), Anna Schiltz '24 (bottom center, sitting) and Louie Zhang '24 (bottom center, standing).

Working on the show was a blast. For a large number of the cast and crew this show was full of firsts. Senior Olivia Jordan was in charge of the costumes for this riveting period piece. Olivia mentioned that she had never done a period piece before, “It was lots of fun, but it involved lots of research, poring over antique photos to understand the fashion of the time”. She also mentioned that she was very satisfied with how her vision turned out, “We had a ton of freedom to organize what we wanted ''.

This show was also the first murder mystery that director Ms. Healy and co-director Mr. Marshall have ever directed as part of this school. Ms Healy commented, “It can be challenging directing a show like this, but I am absolutely satisfied with everyone's performance, it is always great to see how everyone grows as we go through the show.” Mr Marshall — who also designed the set with the help of the stage production class — provided a similar sentiment when asked about his experience. “It’s been great” he said, “this was my first real set design so there have been moments of learning and growth for everyone.”

There really was a lot of learning that happened during this show, for example I actually learned how to use one of those very old landline telephones (the trick is that you can’t move around with them, they’re attached to the wall). It is very obvious that everyone, from the cast, the crew, the directors, the costume and makeup designers, had a wonderful time taking part in this production and we hoped everyone in the audience enjoyed it as well.
